1, 2, 3 COOK at St Edmunds 2nd Edition

1,2,3 Cook was back by popular demand at St. Edmunds School. Last Thursday 20th August, year 9/10 tech students cooked up a storm with the help of two very talented and obliging chefs from the Hornsby RSL.

The day was divided into segments and was bedlam at times, but Chef's James and Shane kept the students on task with exciting menus and humorous presentations.

Students divided into teams and competed against each other. The judging criteria were based on safety, team work, and food hygiene and time management. Students made many dishes, all of which were of a high standard. We found that it was just too hard to pick a winner, so all of the students received a prize for their winning attitudes, enthusiasm and teamwork. The St. Edmunds students presented James, Shane and North West BEN certificates of thanks and also sent hand-written thank you notes to us all which we received this week in the mail.

Thanks to St Edmunds students for brightening our day on Thursday and for James and Shane of Hornsby RSL, who have agreed to visit the school again in October to impart their knowledge and bring more joy to the kitchen of St. Edmunds.

Leisure and Recreation WorkshopIMG_1430

On Monday 13th  July, North West BEN in Partnership with Andrew Hill of Andrew Hill Sports ran a Sporting and Leisure workshop which was followed by discussions from Sports, Leisure and Recreation industry representatives.

Andrew’s mission is to get kids “healthy, active and energised” and  in his two hour  workshop, Andrew managed to do exactly that, with 25 students participating in a variety of games. Throughout the practical workshop, Andrew also discussed the role of leadership and teamwork.

Afterwards, our guest speakers discussed the career paths they followed into the Leisure Industry. The students were also provided information about alternative career paths that can also lead into jobs that fall under the banner of “Sports, Leisure and Recreation” .  Following the brief discussions, students and parents were  invited to speak to each representative about their own career goals and interests.

Much positive feedback was received  and North West BEN along with Andrew Hill are considering running another similar workshop in October.

To register your interest, please contact Rebekah Robinson on 9488 7505 or 0403 800 691.

Access and Support Forum

Parents and educators in our area were recently given the opportunity to find out more about post school options for students with a disability at the Access and Support Forum organised by North West BEN.

In spite of wet weather over 40 parents and educators attended the event to listen to presentations from various speakers, and had the opportunity to ask specific questions of the panel of speakers regarding post school options.

Information provided included university and TAFE options, programs available through the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care (DADHC), incentives offered to employers to take on apprentices with a disability, and the role of Disability Employment Networks.

North West BEN received a lot of positive feedback for this event both verbally on the night and in written evaluations received from those attending. We are planning to run this event again later in the year in the Ryde area as there seems to be a great need for this type of information for parents in particular. Further details will be provided soon.

North West BEN would like to thank the speakers who gave their time to make this event such a success.
