Structured Work Placement (SWL)
Structured Workplace Learning is a mandatory component of a number of industry-based vocational education and training (VET) courses that students can choose as part of their pattern of study for the Higher School Certificate. The courses range from Business Services and Information Technology through to Construction, Metal and Engineering, Retail, Hospitality, Primary Industries, Tourism and Entertainment.
The Process:
- North West BEN liaises with businesses to see what opportunities they can offer over the year
- Schools put in requests for what their students require; and
- North West BEN manages the process to make sure legislative requirements are met and the needs of both parties are met
Student Online Registration
- Students must register their details with NWBEN for their work placement online at
http://www.workplacementweb.com.au/nwben
- Teachers can approve their students' registration details by logging on to
http://www.workplacementweb.com.au/nwben/teacher
Once approved by the teacher(s), the student record would be imported into the NWBEN Database and is then used for processing Structured Work Placement.
Work Placement differs from Work Experience (Year 10 usually) in that the students already have knowledge and skills in their chosen area and they work towards course outcomes for the week.
Self Sourced Work Placement
Students who find their own employer for work placement need to complete the following form and give to their teacher or coordinator.
Work Placement Requests
In order for work placements to be organised as efficiently as possible, North West BEN requires student numbers and dates for placements in term 4 of the previous year. For full details of work placement timeframes and procedures, please refer to the following document.

Work Readiness
Please ensure that your students are work ready prior to going out on work placement. A North West BEN staff member would be happy to come out your school and present a work ready talk for your students to prepare them for work placement, covering topics such as behaviour while on work placement, employer expectations, what to do in an emergency etc.
Please contact North West BEN on (02) 9440 9656 or email info@northwestben.com.au to schedule a work ready talk.
