What are Apprenticeships and Traineeships?

An Apprenticeship or Traineeship can provide an exciting career option for young people leaving school. They can also provide a career pathway to higher education or establishing their own business.

What is the difference between an Apprenticeship and a Traineeship?

An Apprenticeship is a structured program for 3-4 years that combines practical experience at work with formal training through a Registered Training Organisation eg. TAFE.
A Traineeship is a structured program, usually lasting for 12-24 months that combines on and off the job training. They are generally in non-trade related areas and can be part time or full time programs.

What are School-Based Apprenticeships?

A School-Based Traineeship combines paid work, training and school. Students can finish their HSC and gain credit towards an apprenticeship, giving the student a head start at TAFE in an apprenticeship. A student would start at the beginning of year 11 and finish at the end of year 12.
